THE family of a great grandfather who died following a collision in Cwmbran have paid tribute to him calling him a “delightful chap."
Dave Fields, 75, was critically injured following the incident near the car wash on Llantarnam Road on the morning of Sunday, June 22.
He was taken to the Royal Gwent Hospital in Newport but died last Friday.
Mr Fields’ family said in a statement that the former butcher and machine driver was a well known figure in Cwmbran.
The family said: “He couldn't go anywhere without someone stopping him for a chat. He really was a delightful chap.”
In his retirement he enjoyed watching horse racing and he was an avid fan of The Grand National.
The statement continued: “Dave was an amazing man. He was adored by his family and was always there when they needed him. He touched many hearts and will be dearly missed.
“Dave was a real family man with three generations of children. He idolised each and every one of them. Dave was the happiest when he was surrounded by his family especially the children. He was the one all the children would go to and he had a real special bond with them all.”
Mr Fields married his wife Marilyn in 1960 and they had five children together.
A 26-year-old man from Gloucester was arrested on suspicion of careless driving, driving without a driving licence and driving without insurance following the incident. He remains on police bail.
Anyone with any information about the incident on June 22 is asked to get in touch with Gwent Police on 101 and quote number 237 22/6/14.
