On the 50th anniversary of classic film, Zulu. Chapter Arts Centre will be celebrating the milestone by spending July and August paying homage to its star, Stanley Baker, one of Wales’ greatest actors.
Born in the mining community of Ferndale, Stanley Baker, alongside lifelong friend Richard Burton, went on to Hollywood stardom as a character actor rather than romantic lead. Proving an enduring and powerful presence, his screen persona was taciturn, even surly, and the young actor was almost wilfully unromantic. Despite never being cast as the romantic leading man, and the association between him and villainous roles, he became a star, by the power of his personality and his potent screen presence. Later working as a producer, he made some of the great films of the era.
Chapter Arts Centre will be screening some of these classic films, and there will be a number of special events around the screening of Zulu.
The events commence this Sunday, July 6, with ‘Stanley Baker: As Good as Bread’: A talk about Stanley Baker, by the writer and broadcaster Tony Earnshaw will take place on Sunday July 6, between (6-7pm). This will be followed by Côr Meibion Morlais performing at 7pm. This will be followed by a Screening of Zulu with an introduction by Robert Shail who wrote ‘Stanley Baker: A Life in Film’ at 7.30pm.
