PUPILS in Cwmbran received prizes for their flower entries as part of Cwmbran community council’s Primary Schools in Bloom competition.
The competition took place at the council chamber on Ventnor Road, Cwmbran.
All the junior schools in Cwmbran were invited to take part and seven schools joined in the competition, with the community council providing the seeds that the pupils were to grow and nurture at the school.
Children grew pansies, alyssum and shrubs.
The pupils brought their prized plants to the council chamber for judging by well known horticulturalist Keith Sweetzer.
Llantarnam Primary School were awarded first place and were awarded £100 worth of vouchers, and Our Ladies of the Angels took second place and received £75 in vouchers.
In third place was Maendy Primary who were given £50 in vouchers.
The four remaining schools were each given £25 in vouchers for participating in the competition.
The community council’s vice-chairman, Mike Johnson, awarded the pupils with vouchers and certificates.
He said: “We were all impressed with the standard of the entries and it was hard for the judge to choose as they were so good.
“More schools took part this year than last year and it goes to show that children are getting more and more interested in the outdoors and learning about the environment.”
Mr Sweetzer also shared his wisdom on the environment and recycling with the children.
