A SENIOR Labour assembly member has said uncertainty surrounding the University of South Wales’ Caerleon Campus is a huge disappointment.

Dame Rosemary Butler, AM for Newport West, said she will do everything she can to ensure courses can be kept there, and to make sure the city centre campus is extended and expanded.

The Argus revealed last week the future of the Caerleon campus hangs in the balance with the institution assessing its entire estate.

The presiding officer of the assembly, who on Saturday announced her decision not to run for election in 2016, said: “It’s a huge disappointment. We will obviously do everything we can to make sure we can keep courses”.

Its future is being considered by USW executives, along with four other USW campuses in South Wales.

The university is obliged to provide higher education at Caerleon until 2018 as part of the merger agreement.
