July 14 1914 was hailed as Newport's greatest day with a royal visit by Prince Arthur of Connaught to head the inauguration of Alexandra Dock's new lock, making the dock the world's largest.
Glowing tributes were paid to the work of the Nursing Association at Caerleon and the Royal Gwent hospital at a meeting of Caerleon council.
There was little change in the engineers strike at Newport and whilst crew were signing on for duty, it was impossible to obtain engineers.
It was by reported that four well-dressed young ruffians had been stealing apples in the West Park road area whilst many residents were attending the official opening of the new dock.
