There was a hint of yet more cuts in country services of the Western Welsh bus company when the chairman gave an address to shareholders.
Postmen on 24 hour official strike participated in a demonstration through Newport with placards and banners. The strike was to be followed by an immediate overtime ban in a protest over wages.
Sales fever hit The C&A store in Newport as thousands queued eager to get their hands on fire-salvage bargains offered at rock bottom prices. The staff of 80 were reinforced to 140 and in the rush handles were broken off doors and clothes trampled on the floor.
The minister of health visited Newport to lay the foundation stone of the new Royal Gwent hospital. It will have 885 beds and concentrate the obstetrics and gynaelogical beds currently spread over four hospitals.
