TRADERS in Abergavenny say an order banning a 28 year-old man from entering the town centre and from asking any members of the public for money or other valuables sends a clear message to potential offenders.

Jayce Ewers was given a three-year Criminal Anti-Social Behaviour Order by Newport magistrates on June 17, following an application by Gwent Police. The order will last until midnight on June 17, 2017, and if breached, a custodial sentence of up to five years can be imposed by the court upon conviction.

Fiona Bevan, owner of the Miserable Cow Coffee Bar, of Cibi Walk, said: “I am supportive of the order by Gwent Police because this sort of behaviour intimidates our shoppers and puts them off coming into Abergavenny which is becoming a thriving town.”

Town Mayor and Monmouthshire county councillor, Martin Hickman said: “Anti-social behaviour and begging is a persistent nuisance to shop keepers and the elderly who come into town to do their shopping so this will give them reassurance and peace of mind.”

“I am pleased something is being done and hope that Gwent Police can target others behaving in this way.”

Janis Davies, of Goodies Womenswear on Frogmore Street and Abergavenny Business Club secretary, said: “We are working very hard to encourage visitors to the town. they want to feel comfortable, safe and not intimidated.”

“We have had a couple of visitors who have made comments on anti-social behaviour.”

Abergavenny Crime and Disorder Reduction Officer, PC Mal John said: “Gwent Police made the application to offer protection to the residents, retailers and visitors to Abergavenny from his persistent anti-social behaviour and criminality. We are pleased that the court recognises his conduct has been intolerable and hope that the order will either lead Mr Ewers to curb his behaviour or that it will give officers the ability to robustly deal with any breaches.”

Mr Ewers cannot the town centre, High Street, Frogmore Street, Nevill Street, Lewis Lane, Flannel Street, Cross Street, St Mary’s Church and grounds, Market Street, King Street, Bus station, Aldi’s grounds, Waitrose grounds, and any public car parks from 8am-8pm, except to collect a chemists’ prescription.
