MORE than 1,000 people turned out at Undy Fun Day yesterday for a madcap game of ‘It’s a Knockout’ at the town’s athletic club.

Teams from across Gwent took on the inflatable obstacle course made famous by the gameshow on BBC1 and Channel 5, raising money for Diabetes UK. Among contenders were teams from both Cardiff Road and Spytty Tesco stores in Newport, who vied for supremacy with Spytty eventually victorious.

Cardiff Road’s Jay Hales said despite coming in behind their rivals the day was a success: “Everyone got sunburnt and had a good time.

“A team of ten from right across our store were in the team, from the store manager to people on the check-outs. Everybody wanted to get involved and a good time was had by all.”

The event was organised by Tesco’s Magor Distribution Centre in the hope of raising more £25,000 for Diabetes UK, Tesco’s national charity partner.

As well as the obstacle course, the day included a car-boot sale, go karts, football competition, quad bikes, rodeo bull, live music and a hog roast.

The funds raised will contribute towards supporting the 3.8 million people living with diabetes in the UK and help thousands of people reduce their risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes.

Competition was high with a prize of £500 on offer for the winning team, as well as an additional £500 cash prize for the team raising the most money for Diabetes UK.

After battling it out on the inflatables, teams relaxed with live music and dancing until midnight.
