CHILDREN are learning about pirouettes and spins as they take part in a Ballet Cymru Summer workshop.

Around 34 children from across Gwent are taking part in a Ballet Cymru dance workshop at the Riverfront Theatre this week aiming to teach children a variety of dances ranging from ballet to street.

The workshop running until July 26 is aimed at dancers age 9 plus and age 13 plus and features classes in street, ballet, musical theatre and contemporary.

Under the expertise of artistic director Darius James, assistant artistic director Amy Doughty, street dancer Jamie Wall and ballet dancer Mandev Sokhi, the young dancers will perform a showcase at the end of the week.

Mr Sokhi has been dancing with the company for the last seven years, said children come back year on year.

“It is a great experience for the children,” he said.

“It is a good opportunity for them to have fun and make friends.

“They get to learn a variety of dance styles and take part in creative sessions led by instructors.

“It is the joy of performing that keeps the children coming back and it is nice to see the familiar faces and see how they have improved.”
