Later in the evening, Cardiff's own Capital City Jazz Orchestra took the stage with an evening of Big Band music.
The performance was originally intended to take place on the level 3 foyer of St David's Hall - but was moved into the main auditorium because of a big surge in ticket sales, much to the obvious delight of both audience and the orchestra!
They were joined by Clare Teal, host of Big Band Special on Radio 2, and together they gave a hugely enjoyable programme, with a mixture of classic and contemporary Big Band standards.
The first half featured Too Darn Hot, Skylark and the timeless Feeling Good, with Clare keeping up a flow of witty repartee with the audience between numbers.
After the interval, the band launched into Indiana, before being rejoined by Clare for a rendition of Peggy Lee's famous The Folks Who Live on The Hill.
Then she cajoled everyone into joining her for a finger-clicking version of Fever and some outstanding sax, trombone and trumpet solos followed.
With a standing ovation, the crowd demanded two encores which Clare and the orchestra happily delivered - and the evening ended on a high note with I just Want to Make Love toYou and Get Happy.
