A STAGGERING HALF-A-TON of unwanted goods have been saved from going to landfill thanks to a new second hand shop at Newport tip.
The Second Chance Re-use Shop, at the Household Waste and Recycling Centre in Docks Way, Newport, saw 50 items sold in its first day in June.
Now, Newport council has announced the shop will be extending its opening hours, due to massive popularity from customers.
Councillor Ken Critchley, cabinet member for infrastructure, said the staggering amount of items left had seen the shop become a real hit with bargain hunters.
He said: “The shop has been open for less than a month, but the council has been overwhelmed by the visits to the shop as well as the positive feedback from residents.
“As a result, the council has decided to extend the opening hours of the facility, helping divert more items from landfill, and providing more excellent bargains for the customers.”
The shop, which sells 'unloved' items including bikes, golf clubs, furniture, bedding plants, shrubs and logs, will now open for two and a half hours longer, from 10am until 5.30pm every Wednesday.
All the money raised will be put back into the running of the facility and help council tax rates for Newport down remain low.
Items of the week will be advertised on Newport Council’s Twitter page at @newportcouncil
