AFTER last month’s National Championships, Monmouthshire welcomes back Britain’s best cyclists for the grand finale of British Cycling’s Elite Circuit Series.

The series, made up of six separate races, culminates in Chepstow town centre on July 30, a week today (July 30) with Monmouthshire playing host to the only race on Welsh soil.

This year’s Elite Circuit Series began in Otley on July 2, which saw the Tour de France peloton pass through on their way to Paris a few days later. The series then headed goes to Stockton-on-Tees, Colne, Beverley and arrives in Sheffield today, (July 23) before the sixth and final race hits Chepstow.

The field of nearly 60 riders has a number of South Wales cyclists including Ed Laverack, the new under-23 British champion, who won his title winning this title only a few weeks ago at Abergavenny.

Councillor Bob Greenland, cabinet member for innovation, enterprise and leisure said: “We have another action-packed evening of cycling races lined-up for residents and for visitors to our beautiful county. We hope you come to Chepstow and experience the energy and excitement of the event. We know from last month’s cycling championships in Abergavenny that there is nothing quite like it.”

The route is over 1.17km, which starts and finishes near Chepstow Castle on Bridge Street. The race has no set distance and will be determined by an hour’s racing followed by five laps. The stars are on the starting line at 8pm and are preceded by a number of youth races that will see young stars challenge for their own titles.

Road closures between 4pm and midnight on July 30 include Beaufort Square, High Street, Bank Street, Middle Street, Hocker Hill Street, Bridge Street, St Ann Street, Lower Church Street, Church Road, Nelson Street, Upper Church Street and St Mary Street.

The Tour of Britain will also come to Monmouthshire in September.
