NEWPORT County fans had double cause for celebration on Saturday as they scored a victory against longstanding rival Carl Zeiss Jena before enjoying a fun day at Rodney Parade.
There were 2,630 home and away supporters at the match, with thousands going on to the live music and games after the AFC pre-season friendly match at Spytty Park finished 1-0 to County.
A river of amber and blue football shirts could be seen streaming into Rodney Parade following the home victory, with six live bands playing throughout the evening.
Among the crowd were 900 Germany supporters who made the pilgrimage to South Wales to watch the game.
The two clubs enjoy a friendly rivalry with County supporters visiting Germany last year, where they partied with Carl Zeiss Jena supporters.
One of the live bands playing was German, so fans were sure to feel welcome.
Dave Boddy, chief executive of Newport County, said: “We took 400 of our supporters over to Germany last summer so we’re repaying the compliment.
“It’s a great atmosphere. I would imagine people will be drinking lots and partying – it’s all very good natured and good spirited. "There’s a wonderful bond between the two clubs.”
He said after organising the game and fun day he was hoping to have a rest following the game – but he would be rocking along to his son’s indie rock band Purple Shades.
Other bands performing using a state of the art sound system which saw action at Glastonbury Festival were Whose Pinksi from Germany, The Money Shot, DJ Pikey, AJ Fitz and Misled Truth.
There was no cost to attend the fun day as it was a celebration of the long history between the two clubs.
Guests could play football and other sports at the fun day, as well as eat and drink from stalls and the club’s bar until midnight.
