A WATER feature erected in memory of Newport lifeguard Steve Lewis, who died from stomach cancer aged just 31, has been restored after being targeted by vandals.
The feature in the garden at St David’s Hospice Care day hospice in Malpas is now back in place and looking as good as new.
Steve’s mum Jackie Lewis, from St Julians, said she was delighted the feature had been restored and thanked The Rotary Club of St Woolos Newport for donating £200 towards the cost.
Mrs Lewis, who has raised thousands of pounds for St David’s Hospice Care since her son died, said: “Steve spent a great deal of his life in water both as a swimmer as a young man and then as a lifeguard working for Newport Council. The marvellous stainless steel water feature in the garden at St David’s Hospice is therefore a very fitting tribute to him.”
Michael Hine, of The Rotary Club of St Woolos Newport, staunch supporters of St David’s Hospice Care, said: “We were very upset to hear about the damage and one of our members very kindly contributed towards the cost of its reinstatement.”
Kris Broome, of St David’s Hospice Care said it was “wonderful” that the water feature had been restored.
