A TORFAEN school has raised £500 for the hospital where their former pupil died after spending just one hour with her newborn son.
Ysgol Gyfun Gwynllyw, Pontypool, has donated the £500 to Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham in memory of former pupil Hannah-Michelle Browne.
A rare medical condition caused 21-year-old Hannah-Michelle Browne from Pontypool to suffer a massive cardiac arrest and plunge into a coma during labour, leaving her unaware she had given birth.
Three weeks later, doctors were able to regain her consciousness so she could meet her son Gerwyn for the first time.
But after spending just one hour with her baby she slipped back into unconsciousness and died two weeks later.
Pupils took part in a dress down day event at the school and presented a cheque to the Birmingham hospital this month where the former pupil spent her last days after giving birth.
Over the last year, her mum, Michelle Browne, has embarked on a series of fundraising events in her daughter’s memory, raising £7,700 for the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham Charity.
“I was overwhelmed by the support that was given,” she said.
Now she plans to embark on her ultimate fundraising challenge-a sponsored skydive in Swansea next year.
A Just Giving page for Hannah will be set up in the coming months.
The Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham Charity is currently fundraising for the creation of a new Rare Diseases Centre, which will enhance the world-class facilities.
