BARACK Obama could be sampling Nato themed sausages from Newport's indoor market with a plan for local traders to sell food at the Celtic Manor during September’s summit.
Summit organisers have asked for applications for between eight and ten places to sell Welsh produce on September 4 and 5.
Traders from the market are preparing to make bids, but must be willing to undergo strict vetting procedures and undergo airport style security searches before coming and going.
Organisers want to see traditional Welsh fayre such as laverbread, cheese and welsh cakes sold alongside produce such as local fish and chips, sausages, honey, coffee and chocolate, particularly things that could be packed and taken home by delegates.
Jon Powell, who runs the kiosk newsagents, said he would be making a bid and encouraging other market traders to do the same.
He said: “I’m going to be putting in a tender for a stall to sell Sidoli's ice cream (made in Ebbw Vale) and the South Wales Argus.
“Hopefully Needham’s Fish Monger will put in a bid as well and a couple of other stalls from the market.
It would of course be fantastic to sell an ice cream to Mr Obama. I don’t know if he even likes ice cream but my recommendation to him would be coconut, crème caramel and fudge which is my personal favourite.
“As far as people in the market are concerned, I will be geeing people into having a go. I’d like to see the Nato burgers and sausages available. I’m mega excited.”
Chris Evans, councillor for Rogerstone, said it was an opportunity to “showcase our traders to the world.”
He said: “There has been a bit of negativity over the last two or three days. This is a great opportunity for Newport traders and I’m sure our traders will do all they can to make it happen.”
The deadline to apply is August 18.
