THE owner of a Newport cafe has said his special Nato-themed ‘peace burgers’ have been a hit with customers.

Owner, partner and chef of the Secret Garden Cafe, Phillip Harris, created the vegan Peace Burger ahead of the Nato summit which comes to Newport on Thursday.

The 35-year-old said: “The Nato summit originated as a peaceful organisation to stop a lot of what was happening in the world so I created this peace burger.

“They are pretty popular. We’ll keep it going for a few more weeks yet. We’ve made up loads of patties in advance and frozen them.”

Mr Harris said more than 50 customers have ordered the mushroom peace burger, which is made up of onion, sage, red wine, breadcrumbs and seasoning and comes with hand-cut potato wedges and a homemade Welsh rarebit sauce.

The chef said the burger, sold at the cafe on Charles Street, means more options for local vegetarians, while traditional beef burger choices are still on offer for meat-eaters.

Secret Garden Cafe is not the only Newport trader to jump on the Nato bandwagon. Rachel’s Curry Kitchen, based at Newport market, launched a Nato samosa earlier this month.

Newport curry restaurant Popadoms has also created a Barack Balti in honour of the US president, which is made up of Welsh vegetables and lamb.
