GIRLS' FOOTBALL: During the last six months girls' football in Pill has taken off. Girls from Pillgwenlly and St Michael's primary schools have taken part in training sessions and matches against each other.
The girls have shown good football skills, as well as playing the game hard and fair. Another success has been the forming of the Pill girls'/ladies' AFC, which is part of the Pill AFC junior section.
The girls have a good coach in local resident Simon Lu, and in recent months three parents have gained qualifications in football coaching to help the girls progress.
Thanks to the help from Pill Communities First and Pill Sport Development the girls have just received a grant of £731 from the Sports Council of Wales for equipment and training. So, if you are between seven and 13 years of age, come and join the other 15 regulars training at Pill Mill on Saturday morning, 10am-11am.
The club have recently received the good news that there will be a girls' under-11s Newport and District football league commencing September 2007. For more information contact Norman on 01633 671823.
DISABILITY SPORTS: A Disability Multi-Sports session has been running at Pill YMCA every Friday morning between 10am and 11am. The sessions are aimed at young adults with disabilities and are set up through a partnership between Equinex and Pill Sports Development.
The group have just been awarded a grant of £750 from Newport Community Chest for hire of facilities plus equipment, and also, for local people to acquire qualifications in coaching disabled performers. For more information contact Norman on 01633 671823.
DRAGON SPORTS: There are three new Dragon Sports clubs in Pill. They are cricket every Tuesday at Pill YMCA, 4pm-5pm; hockey every Wednesday, 4pm -5pm at Pill Millennium Centre, and rugby union every Thursday from 4pm-5pm at Pill Millennium Centre. The ages for the clubs are seven-11 years. Boys and girls welcome to all sessions.
POSITIVE FUTURES: Throughout the week there are various different sessions running in Pill for boys and girls aged between ten and 19 years. Monday, 4.30pm-6pm, Freestyle Football to Music; Wednesday, six-a-side football, 5pm-6pm; Thursday, girls' multi-sports 5pm-6pm. All these activities take place at Pill Millennium Centre.
Also, a multi-sports session for boys and girls, in conjunction with the youth club, takes place at Pill YMCA between 6pm and 8pm every Tuesday.
Furthermore, in 2006 funding from Positive Futures enabled more than 15 boys and girls between the ages of 14 and 19 to attend various coaching courses i.e. rugby league, volleyball, football, JSLA, pool lifeguard, dance leaders, first aid and coaching disabled performers.
The outcome from these qualifications has meant four young people now take a leading role in the Pill community sports programme, and two young lads now have part-time paid work. One is a pool lifeguard and the other is a football coach for the city council.
IRELAND V WALES CELEBRATION NIGHT: On Sunday, February 4, there will be an Ireland v Wales celebration night at the Irish Club, in Pill. There will be music by Wally Corrigan and the Showband, and the fun will start at 8pm and go on until late.
