The Five Villages - Brynawel, Cwmfelinfach, Wattsville, Wyllie, Ynysddu Haven on the Hill: There are plenty of community things going on in the Haven. For those who like a game of cards come along and join the Monday night crib and don.
The Senior Citizens hold their bingo night on a Monday and there's bingo for everyone on Thursdays and Saturdays. Pool is on Wednesdays and Sundays.
Ladies - if you want a game of darts there are two teams to try for. Haven B, captained by Zoe Edwards, is currently third in the league and is hopeful for great things. Not to be left behind is the Haven A, jointly captained by Margaret Hutchins and Fay Kavanagh. Both teams are looking forward to the Cwmfelinfach and District Ladies Darts finals in March. Zoe says, win or lose, darts is a great night out for the girls, who are great company.
New fencing: Readers of last week's column who read about new fencing at the back of High Street, Ynysddu, and Western Terrace in Cwmfelinfach will be pleased to know that, finally, the old wooden fencing along the main road through Ynysddu is also being replaced by a smart wall and railing.
This has been made possible by approval from the Welsh Assembly government. The dilapidated appearance of the old fencing had been an eyesore for years and residents of Ynysddu are delighted that the new fencing will improve the appearance of the area. This is good for Ynysddu and good for the whole Valley.
Ynysddu Rugby Club: This week the club is welcoming Cibourne Rugby Club, from Biarritz in France. Over here for the start of the Six Nations, the team is sampling Welsh hospitality and staying in the village.
The Rugby Club's refurbishment is well in hand and members are looking forward to opening the new lounge area in March.
The club is one of the first in the area to ban smoking completely from its premises, in advance of the new non-smoking laws in April. Lawson Short, Secretary, says the members have respected the decision and there have been no problems.
Ynysddu Primary: The bad weather has halted work on the allotments but the children have been very busy buying a new shed with the proceeds from the open day and raffle - so it's a big thank you to all those who came along and supported the school.
Apparently Chris, the school clerk, can turn his hand to anything and is very good at building sheds!
Also, the school has been offered a free greenhouse - so it looks like another job for Chris, perhaps he can persuade Ray the school caretaker to help him.
The willow arch structure in the school gardens has suffered some damage during the winter storms but it stayed up. Caerphilly Groundwork Trust is coming to the school to repair the damage and make it as good as new.
Cwmfelinfach Primary: Lots of projects and classes are being started in Cwmfelinfach. Years 5 and 6 have just started swimming classes with Mr Hollifield and Mr Maloney. An exciting new project will be starting soon, when the older children will be making a video and taking it down to a school in Newport, where they will be setting up links and pen pals. The Animation club has just successfully secured a bid for £1,000 from Western Power Distribution and are going to use the money to buy an updated animation computer. Watch this space for further news!
Councillor's Surgeries: Cllr Jan Jones will be holding her monthly surgeries on Saturday, February 3, as usual starting at 12 noon at the Progressive Club; 1pm at the Haven on the Hill; and finishing up at 2pm at the Jubilee Club.
