100 years ago
* An inquest was held at Abertillery police station into the death of a man at Six Bells colliery. The deceased had fallen 30 feet from scaffolding while repairing a roof on one of the colliery buildings. A verdict of accidental death was recorded.
* The Temperance Hall, Newport, having been acquired by the Newport Defence Committee for the use of Army recruits was officially opened as a central institute by The Lord Lieutenant of Monmouthshire.
* A Newport couple were convicted of neglecting their three children in a manner to cause them unnecessary suffering. The mother was committed for a month’s hard labour, and she promised to turn over a new leaf and find help for her addiction to alcohol.
* It was announced that the people of Monmouthshire had responded in true Christmas spirit to the plea for Christmas puddings for the men at the front. More than 2,000 puddings had been despatched as a result of the Argus appeal.
