A NEW documentary about a former professional boxer from Newport will be premiered in the city next month.

The film – ‘Boxing in the Blood’ – follows former British Featherweight Champion Steve ‘Sammy’ Sims and his current role as a manager, promoter and trainer.

The 56-year-old runs Sammy’s Community Hub at Alway and Ringland Boxing Club on Lliswerry Road in Newport, with the aim of keeping youngsters on the straight and narrow.

The film will be shown for the first time on Friday, December 12, at the Open Hearth Pub in Ringland, with all proceeds going to charity.

Mr Sims said: “We have been filming for around two years and have gone to all kinds of different shows and gyms.

“It gives an idea of professional boxing, and the work that goes on behind the scenes. I’m a self-employed boxing trainer and I run the community hub which is to get youngsters off the streets.

“I’m very proud of the film. I’ll be making a special announcement on the night [of the premiere] as well.”

John Griffiths, Labour AM for Newport East, paid tribute to Mr Sims’ work inside and outside the boxing ring.

He said: “Steve is well regarded not just for his great successes in the ring during a distinguished boxing career, but for his tireless work in the local community. During my time as the AM for Newport East I have come across Steve’s good work on many occasions, and I am sure that the new documentary will show his enthusiasm and energy for engaging young people in sport in some of the most disadvantaged areas of our city.

“Steve is a great ambassador for the sport of boxing and for the city of Newport to which he has always remained loyal.”

Tickets for the premiere are £5 each, and all proceeds go to charity. Contact Mr Sims for more details on 07761 965416.
