THE weekend’s heavy rain which had caused the River Usk to overflow at Abergavenny and the Afon Lwyd to burst its banks at Cwmbran had receded by Monday morning and all roads in the county were now passable.
It was announced that Newport's civic centre clock tower could cost more than the £113,000 contract price as the contractors had a terrific number of stoppages and the result would be a need for extra payment.
Residents of flats in the Plantation area of Croesyceiliog claimed that they were paying for luxury and not getting it with mildew on floors, leaks, insufficient heating and shoddy workmanship. They were paying the highest rent at £5 15s a week.
Despite a denial by the Ministry of Defence a trade unionist at ROF Glascoed re-affirmed that an inspectorate had shown that 200 workers had been overpaid for 19 years.
