THIS is the junction of Victoria Avenue, Wharf Road and Chepstow Road.
The George pub stands to the right and is still going strong. Going down to Maindee there have been many changes over the decades, mainly that the once thriving area now has a fair few empty shops. Sad. Also, a good number of pubs have gone, like the Globe and Carpenters, which were once popular haunts.
Jim Dyer, Newport In the Then photograph, dated 1900, we are looking along Chepstow Road towards Maindee Square. On the right at the junction with Victoria Avenue is the George Hotel. The building on the left displaying three balls was a pawn shop where you could part with your possessions to raise money in the short term. Four doors further along at number 168 was the Fair Oak Inn.
Observe the elegant gas street lighting and the short distances between the National Telephone Company’s telegraph poles which provided a service for the newly invented telephones.
This service was later passed to the General Post Office before becoming BT in 1984. The landscape was constantly changing due to these new inventions. The tram car appears to be horse-drawn; the electrification of the tram service in Newport wasn’t introduced until 1903.
Keith Wood, Newport The picture shows the George in Maindee. Opposite on the corner of Wharf Road used to be another pub, the King Billy.
There also used to be a second-hand furniture shop in Wharf Road.
Des Morgan, Trellech The picture is taken looking up towards Maindee Square with the George on the right-hand side. On the left used to be Maindee cinema, which is now a Wetherspoons pub. Opposite the George is the turning for Wharf Road.
Jack Hartshorne, Newport The picture is of the George Hotel in Maindee. Nearby is a keep fit studio and also the Banc pub. Across the road is Wetherspoons, which was once the Maindee cinema and later a bingo hall. The George Hotel faces Wharf Road.
Mrs M Reardon, Newport The picture shows Maindee at the junction of Chepstow Road and Victoria Avenue.
At the time when the picture was taken my grandparents had a greengrocers shop on the site of what is now a branch of Barclays Bank. My mother always referred to Victoria Avenue as George Hill.
Mrs F Oakenden, Newport
