ST DAVID'S Hospice campaigner Jackie Lewis has said she is "over the moon" after smashing her three year fundraising target for the hospice which cared for her son.
Mrs Lewis has managed to raise £33,3333.33 for St David's Hospice Care in memory of son and Newport lifeguard Steven Lewis, who tragically died of stomach cancer on December 21, 2011. He was aged just 31.
The final donation came from friend Sue Murphy and her work colleagues in the financial department at the South Wales Argus, who rallied around and pulled together an Easter raffle to reach and surpass the target. It took the total to £33,369.88
Mrs Lewis said: "[It is] great that it was the Argus that took us that final mile.
"It came as a complete surprise, they raised £109 all organised quickly to get us to our target.
"There seems to be such lovely staff in all departments of the paper."
But Mrs Lewis isn't showing any signs of slowing down her relentless fundraising drive, as she is now looking to raise even more through her packed calendar of events for 2015.
She added: “We are amazed, when I set the target I just pulled it out of my head without too much thought about how we would achieve it and now it is a reality we are all so excited."
Events which along the way included the annual St David's Day Event at the Indoor Bowling Centre which raised £1,900.
The evening saw entertainment from the Bellagio Boys, along with a mini auction of prizes including a Four Ball golfing voucher and spa day.
Following that, half marathon runner Jacqui Harries and Glan Usk Primary School staff also donated £335 donation.
“It not only brought us to a point where we were £85 away from our target of £33,333.33, two months before our target date, but was also very poignant,” Mrs Lewis said.
“Both of our sons attended Durham Road School, the school for this area before the new Glan Usk Primary School was built and Jacqui worked there when my youngest son attended the school.
“Since then we have had some smaller but equally important donations that has brought up to within £60 of that all important third year figure.”
Now another event has been added to the fundraising programme - on April 24 a bingo night will be held at the St Julian's Conservative Club at 7.30pm.
Funds will also be raised at an annual three-mile spring bank holiday fancy dress walk on May 25 starting at the Newport Indoor Bowling Centre from12.25pm.
World cyclists Rob Shipley and Ryan Farley will be starting the walk and prizes will be given for the best fancy dress in male/female/under 12 categories.
Participants unable to raise sponsorship can make a £5 donation per family.
Meanwhile this summer’s It's a Knockout swimming event will now be held on the September 6 at 1.15pm, instead of July 12 due to unforeseen circumstances.
“[I am] looking forward to announcing our new target for the fourth year of fund raising and I am sure there will be a four in it somewhere,” Mrs Lewis added.
