THE line-up of Newport’s Record Store Day music event was announced yesterday with Goldie Lookin’ Chain and three other bands set to play.
Newport bands the Vestals and Burning Ferns will be performing at the event on Saturday, April 18, as well as Cardiff-based Houdini Dax who recently had all their instruments and equipment stolen from their van. Goldie Lookin’ Chain is set to perform a DJ set.
Diverse on the Usk will be held on the terrace of Newport’s Riverfront Theatre from 4pm to 8pm to celebrate the international annual Record Store Day which celebrates independent music shops.
South Wales rock band Houdini Dax is appearing at the gig despite having £10,000 worth of equipment stolen from their van which was broken into overnight on March 30.
The three-piece band, whose insurance did not cover the theft, lost everything including their amps, guitars, pedals and drum gear and are now appealing on a crowdfunding website to raise the money needed for replacements. So far they have raised £3,137.
As well as live music, the event, curated by Newport record shop Diverse Music and sponsored by Loftus Garden Village, features a pop-up shop inviting people to be part of the vinyl revival.
The Kriminal Records pop-up shop will open in the theatre selling second hand records with all money raised going towards Maes Ebbw Bach, a school for children with autism and other special needs.
Organisers are calling on people to donate their unwanted vinyl ahead of the event which will be sold to generate extra funds for the school.
Elsewhere in the city and throughout the day, Musicians provided by Newport City Radio will be playing pop-up gigs along Commercial Street between the city’s two record stores – Kriminal Records in the market and Diverse Music on Charles Street.
