A MAGOR group is in the process of creating a business plan as their next step in a long campaign for towards settimng up a new railway station.
Members of Magor Action Group on Rail (Magor) met the Severnside Programme Board last month and is now in the process of creating a business plan which will be presented to the board in May.
The group will be asking the board to formally endorse the project and the possibility of earmarking money towards a feasibility study.
A £40,000 feasibility study is needed to see how economically viable the station would be.
The group have also spoken with Kellie Beirne, chief officer of enterprise, at Monmouthshire council, who will be helping the group to promote an event in Magor.
Campaigner Paul Turner said: "The idea is to get big business and other organisations involved to identify some match funding.
"When we know how much we can get we will launch a crowd funding appeal to raise the rest of the money. It is all very positive at this stage taking the next step forward."
The crowd funding campaign in March raised £4,000 but the group did not receive this money as the target of £20,000 wasn't reached. They are hopeful that with funding from business a smaller target in crowd funding will be achievable.
The preferred site for the station is in the centre of the village and is a joint vision with the Magor Undy Sports and Leisure Association to incorporate the station within a community centre.
Magor and Undy stations closed in 1964 to passengers as part of a railway cutsrestructure of British railways and the group hope aspire to reopen the station infor 2018.
