A RISCA man is taking on a 101 mile cycling challenge for a diabetes charity after his daughter was diagnosed with the condition.
Steve Aldridge, 43, will take part in the Wiggle Wye Warrior next month to raise funds for the JDRF charity who conduct research into curing diabetes.
His daughter Seren was diagnosed with type one diabetes last October at eight years old.
He said: “It’s changed our lives, even just going out for meals as we now have to ask for all the nutritional information about the meals.
"After seeing what Seren went through for every injection and every prick of the finger when testing her blood during the early days in hospital, I was determined to do something to raise money for JDRF so a cure could be found.”
The father of two has been cycling an average of 130 miles a week for training in preparation for the event.
He said: “Seren is my inspiration and drive when I'm on my bike. When I'm feeling the pain, I tell myself to man up and get on with it."
Although he admitted he’s a little worried about the amount of hills in the race, he said: “I will do it, I have a lot of people relying on me.”
He has currently raised a total of £960 for JDRF, but is ambitious to raise more for the charity.
The Wiggle Wye Warrior, which takes place on Sunday, May 3, starts from Chepstow Racecourse and will see cyclists head straight up the Wye Valley and along the Wye River.
Participants can chose to do the 'epic' route (101 miles), the 'standard' route (79 miles) or the 'short' route (40 miles).
