A MECHANIC standing trial for allegedly causing the death of a driver in a "100mph race" in Newport told police he had a sleepless night following the fatal crash.

Joseph Cairns, 24, told officers he was left "traumatised" after Jordan Bolt was killed in a "horrendous" accident at an SDR roundabout, a court heard today.

Mr Bolt's Audi S3 flew into the air performing at least one 360 degree "barrel roll" before coming to rest on a grass verge at the Balfe Road roundabout, Newport Crown Court heard.

Airbags deployed but Mr Bolt's head hit the curb during the "massive impact" which caused intrusion to the cockpit of the car, a jury heard.

The 22-year-old died of head trauma including laceration to the brain and a fractured skull, the court was told.

Cairns was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and failing to report an accident on the night of September 15, 2013.

The banned driver told police how he saw debris and a "lot of blood" in the road as he reached the roundabout and drove on, the court heard.

When arrested Cairns told police: "I saw something last night that scared me.

"I haven't slept all night."

Cairns, of Dewstow Street, Newport, denies one count of causing death by dangerous driving, and two lesser charges of causing death by driving while unlicensed, and while uninsured.

The court heard Cairns worked as a mechanic and had borrowed the Subaru he drove that day from a client.

Cairns told police he had come from McDonald's in Spytty's when he saw Mr Bolt's Audi drive past him, the court was told.

He told police he saw the aftermath of the accident and had thought of stopping and calling police.

Yesterday, the court heard the pair had raced against each other on the SDR in Newport at speeds of up to 100mph. The court also heard Cairns had a driving licence but had it revoked in February 2012 because the licence had not been submitted to the DVLA for endorsement.

Nigel Fryer, for the defence, stressed that no one else was involved in the accident, meaning it was a one vehicle crash.

Proceeding.
