SIGHTINGS of military helicopters over Newport may have brought back memories of the Nato summit for some, but the alliance is back in the skies over Gwent as South Wales hosts part of a massive military exercise.
The Chinook and Apache helicopters were part of Exercise Joint Warrior which has seen 1,500 troops based at RAF St Athan and transported to training areas in Caerwent and Pembrey in West Wales.
The exercise began on Saturday and will run until Friday 24 April and will feature 55 war ships and submarines, 70 aircraft and around 13,000 personnel from 14 participating countries.
Elsewhere there will be aerial and ground activity including airborne landings around Salisbury Plain in England and several other areas in Scotland, Northern England and Central England.
The NATO exercise is designed to improve joint operations between the participating countries Armed Forces.
