A NEWPORT care provider has said it will make improvements after a son’s online post of his elderly mother’s “disgusting” food was shared more than 129,000 times.
Steve Ashton last week posted a photo complaining about the meal provided for his 81-year-old mother who lives at Aneurin Bevan Court Sheltered Housing Scheme in Duffryn.
Newport City Homes, who runs the sheltered housing scheme, said they have held a meeting with Mr Ashton and a spokesperson said they are agreeing a “series of improvements which we will monitor with the family and all residents at Aneurin Bevan Court”.
Mr Ashton had a meeting on Monday at the housing site with the managing director of the catering company Talkington Bates Ltd and Newport City Homes.
He posted a photo of his mother’s food last week on Facebook and asked people: “Please take a look and let me know which bit is supposed to be the food?”
“I understand how important these schemes are and the need to look after our elderly, but do you and the people Aneurin Bevan Court or Newport City Homes think serving this disgusting food to my mother or any other elderly person is acceptable?”
Food at Aneurin Bevan Court costs residents £42 a week.
Mr Ashton said his mother is very “vulnerable” when it comes to eating, struggling to find food she likes and is able to chew.
He said when she was complaining daily about the housing scheme’s food he thought she was just being fussy – until he saw the meal.
“I am disgusted. Don't the elderly people in this place deserve to have good food that is catered for all? Shouldn’t they actually have 5* food served to them whilst we sit there and thank for everything they have done in the world?”
