FIREFIGHTERS tackled grass fires across Gwent last night including a deliberately set fire in the playing fields of Newbridge School.
Crews from Abercarn attended to the fire in the playing fields of Newbridge School at 7.50pm last night.
Crews from Duffryn attended a deliberately lit grass fire on the Golf links Gaer Fort in Newport at 7.25pm and Ebbw Vale crew attended a grass fire at Garnlydan at 7.45pm.
Two separate fires were set deliberately on the railway lines at Hawk Drive in Newport at 8.02pm in which Maindee crew attended.
Since Friday morning South Wales Fire and Rescue Service has taken 1,947 999 calls - more than 80 per cent were for grass fires.
Risca and Abertillery crews fought a deliberately started wildfire on Machen Mountain at 8.55pm for 90 minutes using beaters.
Risca crew fought a second deliberately lit fire on Machen Mountain on the Crosskeys side involving half an acre of grass and bracken at 11.41pm.
