AN HISTORIC plaque which recognises former butchers of Newport Market who died in the Second World War will be displayed in the market after it was bought by current stallholders who spotted it in a charity shop.
Steve Reynolds, owner of Toy Army along with fellow stall holder Dean Beddis from Kriminal Records discovered the plaque in the window of Sure Trust charity shop in Newport town centre and decided to buy it for Newport market.
“We recognised a lot of the names as butchers from the market,” Mr Reynolds said.
“We plan to put it up somewhere in the market - the place where it should be.”
The plaque has around 50 names of former Newport Market butchers who died serving as soldiers in the war.
Measuring around 20 x 16 inches, the plaque is handdrawn with a flowering boarder around the card.
The traders paid around £30 for it but believe it could be worth more.
