A YOUNG engineering student from Newport has been recognised by the First Minister for his contribution to the growing skills sector in Wales.
Alex Scott, 21, from Lliswerry, met First Minister Carwyn Jones at an event at the Senedd last month to celebrate Welsh skills champions.
The event congratulated Team Wales on their achievements at the Skills Show and their selection for the UK team for WorldSkills Sao Paulo 2015, which is the world’s largest international skills competition.
Mr Scott, who is studying industrial control at the University of South Wales, was selected to join the UK WorldSkills squad last year following three days of intense competition.
He said: “Skills competitions are a great thing to put on your CV.
“I’ve definitely grown in confidence from them and would recommend taking part to anyone.
“It’s such a privilege to have had my achievements at skills competitions recognised by the First Minister.”
The First Minister added: “This event was about rewarding the achievements of a group who have represented Wales at the highest level in skills competitions across the UK and the world.
“Each one is a shining example of the talented young people we have in Wales and a credit to their skills sector.
“It’s important we reward hard work, as well as skill, and competitions like these have a real place in encouraging a thriving workforce and increasing confidence among our young people.”
Around 1,000 people aged 18-25 take part in WorldSkills to compete for medals in more than 40 different categories, including welding, web design and cooking.
