A DRIVER caught speeding at 114mph was the worst record of excessive speeding on Gwent roads in 2014.
Gwent Police caught a driver doing 114mph on the A449 between the Coldra roundabout and Kemeys Commander in Usk which has a speed limit of 70mph. They also caught three other drivers doing 110mph, 109mph and 103mph on the same stretch of road.
An additional driver was caught speeding on the A449 Llandenny at 109mph.
The findings come as a result of a Freedom of Information (FOI) request made by the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) who asked police forces in Wales for their top five instances of excessive speeding captured on safety cameras on their roads in 2014.
Wales’ worst speeder was recorded by North Wales Police at 136mph on the A5 Ty Nant to Dinmael road in Conwy, which has a speed limit of 60mph – breaking the limit by 76mph.
The IAM is pushing for an increase in visible policing as an active deterrent for speeding.
It is also advocating advanced driving and riding tuition to help drop the numbers of people killed and seriously injured on UK roads.
Where the 114mph speed was recorded between Usk and Newport:
Sarah Sillars, IAM chief executive officer, said: “Those guilty of this level of excessive speeding are clearly not be deterred by a short ban or fine. Their minds need to be concentrated to appreciate that they are putting other road users at significant danger by acting in this way.
"It is crucial that drivers and riders receive continuous development.”
