EIGHT THOUSAND homes were hit by a burst water main at the weekend.

Households in parts of Cwmbran, New Inn and Griffithstown were left without water or low water pressure until Welsh Water restored supplies on Sunday following emergency works.

Toney Williams and his Cwmbran partner Rachel Jenkins became aware of the burst water main on Saturday night.

Mr Williams, 51, said: “They had to shut down the water in most of Cwmbran and parts of Pontypool. My partner phoned Welsh Water. They had emergency workers on it and the water didn’t come back on until Sunday morning.

“We became aware of it at about 10 o’clock. There was no water. They had to switch off the water to carry out the works. It was lucky we had water during the day time.

“We had showered in the afternoon. We were quite fortunate in that respect.”

A Welsh Water spokesman said: “Around 8,000 properties were affected, but not all of these were without water. It would have been a combination of low water pressure or no water.

“We were alerted to a burst on a large diameter water main in the Cwmbran area on Saturday, which was caused by third party damage. We immediately sent a team to site to carry out an emergency repair.

“The team worked hard to keep the water flowing to ensure customers were not without water during the busy tea-time period. All water was restored by the early hours of Sunday morning.

“We would like to thank our customers for their patience and apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused.”
