THE jury in the trial of Mark Jones - charged with the murder of his granddaughter Amelia Jones in Cwmbran in 2012 - will resume its deliberations on a verdict at Newport Crown Court tomorrow morning.

The 12-person panel retired to consider a verdict today after the judge Justice Wyn Williams KT finished his summing up of the evidence after a hearing lasting almost five weeks.

Jones, aged 45, formerly of Govilon Place, Pontnewydd, Cwmbran, but currently of no fixed abode, has pleaded not guilty to the murder charge.

Amelia died on November 19 2012, two days after being rushed to hospital when she stopped breathing when Mark Jones was babysitting her while her mother Sarah Jones, also of Pontnewydd, went to the cinema.

A post mortem examination found she had suffered a skull fracture and eye injuries, and also had rib and leg fractures.

Jones gave differing accounts to police and a hospital doctor as to what happened whilst Amelia was in his care on the evening of Saturday November 17 2012, which medical experts have concluded was the date on which the skull fracture was sustained.

He told police last September, almost two years on, that he had blacked out while carrying Amelia and she had hit her head on the floor.
