Reviews come out faster when the reviewer leaves at half time!” exhales Cory English’s Max Bialystock, in the opening scene of Mel Brooks satirical comedy musical “The Producers”, directed brilliantly by Matthew White. However it is safe to say that this wasn’t the case with me, as I had the pleasure of sitting through what was two hours and fifteen minutes of total genius.
Max Bialystock and Leo Bloom are two producers on Broadway, looking to make their millions, by purposely producing “Springtime For Hitler”, a play that is going to be a guaranteed flop. Cue many slap stick moments from Jason Manford (Bloom) and Cory English (Bialystock), who are both awesome and perfectly cast as the producers, supported by Phil Jupitus who is just brilliant as the fanatical and often crazed playwright, Franz Liebkind. Louie Spence is wonderfully camp as Carmen Ghia, while David Bedella is a delight to watch, putting the spring in “Springtime for Hitler!” And Tiffany Graves is just stunning to watch, adding plenty of humour and sparkle to this hilarious production.
With this in mind, the lead actors are also ably supported by a fantastic ensemble cast, who often enough play different characters in the many stunning dance pieces brilliantly choreographed by Lee Proud. More importantly this entire cast looked like they were having the time of their lives, and rightly so too!
“Stop the world, I want to get on…” Again!!!
The musical runs at the Hippodrome until Saturday night. Tickets are still available.
