SPAM, sherbet fountains and cheese with pineapple on sticks are the order of the day at a 1960s weekend in Blaenavon.

Visitors to the three-day event at Blaenavon Heritage Railway, which continues tomorrow, are transported back in time to the 60s and invited to sample nostalgic foods such as Black Forest gateau and pork scratchings as well as getting a close-up look at classic cars produced during that decade.

A buffet carriage was transformed into a 1960s pub with a themed-menu that featured pickled eggs and local real ale.

Volunteers from the Pontypool and Blaenavon Railway donned outfits that captured the nation during that era from mini-skirts to daisies painted on their faces.

There were rides on a steam and diesel fleet as well as a host of vintage vehicles on display ranging from a 1968 Morris 1000 traveller, Jaguar 240 and a 1967 Rover Saloon.

Corinne Jones, secretary of the Pontypool and Blaenavon Railway said: “We decorated the tea room and buffet car in a 60s style and offered speciality dishes to evoke the 1960s. "We created a display of foods from the 60s and had a stall selling vintage items.

“Our volunteers in the buffet car bought along an old portable record player and played 45s such as Jim Reeves and we are also running a 60s quiz which is given to all visitors.

“It has been busy so far and we are expecting another busy day.”
