A LITTLE piece of Portugal sits in the heart of the city.

Por-do-Sol is Newport's first Portuguese restaurant and is already attracting many customers.

My partner and I dined on a quiet Monday night, as soon as we took our seats a charming Portuguese waiter lit the candle on our table and made us feel welcome.

The menu has something for everyone. There's plenty of fish and vegetarian options and traditional Portuguese dishes to choose from.

While we waited for our starters we could hear fellow diners praising the meals they had just eaten - a good sign of what was to come.

As you wait for your meal it gives you the chance to admire the beautiful murals. Every detail adds to the feeling that you've really stepped into Portugal.

My partner's shrimp came drizzled with a mild chilli sauce and my pork cakes in breadcrumbs were moist, tasty and dressed with salad.

We both wanted to try a traditional dish and chose the francezinha and chicken piri piri.

The francezinha is perfect for the meat lover and is apparently hard to finish - not for my partner.

There were delicious layers of bread, salami, ham, steak, mushrooms and a generous layer of melted cheese and a fried egg to top all smothered in a "secret recipe" sauce.

The chicken piri piri was excellent, just enough spice and served with rice and salad.

The portions were so generous we were too full for dessert.

The waiter brought out two glasses of port to finish off our meal nicely.

With a side order of garlic mushrooms, a bottle of house red, lemonade and port, the meal came to an excellent £43.

As diners left we heard: "We are definitely coming here again, see you soon," our thoughts exactly.
