HUNDREDS of spotty-clothed cyclists turned out to ride in the fourth annual Dalmatian bike ride at the weekend.

The ride in aid of St David's Hospice Care saw 350 cyclist dressed as Dalmatians take on the cycle challenge taking in Newport's landmarks.

The ride started and finished at Caerleon and was led by paralympian cyclist Mark Colbourne with cyclists able to participate in one of two routes - one of 40 miles and one of 18 miles.

The event was set up in memory of John Dixon, who died of bowel cancer five years ago aged 83, and was organised by Dave Rees, Mr Dixon's son-in-law.

Mr Rees said: "It was unbelievable - we had 100 more riders than last year. It was a real family party atmosphere.

"It has grown from 40 riders in the first year to 125, then 250 and now 350 - it has really grown legs. We have to keep it going and the challenge for next year will be an extra 150 riders to make it 500 riders."

He said they hope to raise £28,000 from Saturday's event which would bring the total raised over the last four years to £100,000.

Kris Broome, director of fundraising and lottery at St David's Hospice Care, said: "It was wonderfully supported by everybody involved. There was great support along the route and at the finish at the Priory in Caerleon.

"It was a great scenic route and everyone had a fantastic time especially with the weather."

He added: "We want to thank everyone who came to support and thank Dave Rees and his committee for all their work.”

Cyclist enjoyed a barbecue at the finish line which featured an entertainer dressed as Cruella de Vil from the Disney film 101 Dalmatians as well as seven Dalmatian puppies.

The new route took in some of the iconic places in Newport including Newport Castle; Newport Wave, The Riverfront Theatre and the Transporter Bridge.
