CANINE capers were at the top of the agenda at a Newport park as dogs of all sizes took part in a fun show to raise money for the charity Hope Rescue.

Barks in the Park, held at Brecon Park, off Radnor Road, St Julians, Newport, featured 13 classes ranging from the best looking puppy, dog and bitch, to the waggiest tail and the most appealing eyes.

The event has raised several hundreds of pounds for South Wales charity Hope Rescue, which seeks to rehome stray and abandoned dogs, and was part of the Friends of Brecon Park group's ongoing efforts to promote the use and care of one of Newport's less well known open spaces.

Helun Ford, who chairs the Friends of Brecon Park, said the group was set up four years ago to try to combat anti-social behaviour in the park and encourage more use to be made of it.

"We have two or three events there every year, and it's a real community effort," she said.

"The park is quite high up and the wind was blowing hard for the show, but we had a lot of entries and people have enjoyed themselves."
