NEARLY 1,000 neighbours from Rogerstone gathered together today for their second Big Lunch event – the UK’s annual street get-together for local communities.
The sun was shining as the gates opened at 12pm and residents of the Afon Village community sat and ate lunch together.
The Big Lunch, funded by the Big Lottery and partnered by the Halifax and ASDA, is now in its seventh year and sees people across the UK join together.
Across the city of Newport, neighbours held small gatherings in gardens but Rogerstone’s Big Lunch was the largest event in Newport.
Yesterday saw performances from Rogerstone Brass Band and Head Over Heels cheerleading group, as well as people taking part in a Zumba fitness workshop and storytelling and craft sessions.
It was one of the first mayoral outings for the new Mayor of Newport, Herbie Thomas, who was sworn in on May 19, and his partner, Mayoress Jacqueline Mitchell. Also in attendance was members of the fire service.
The idea for the Rogerstone event was born last year when Janice Rees, 35, met fellow mum Jillian Thomas, 32, on the school run. They formed a committee and started organising.
Big Lunch joint-organiser Janice Rees yesterday said it was “amazing” to see people enjoying the company of their neighbours who they might never have talked to before.
Ms Rees said: “We were determined to make this event bigger and better than last year and today has definitely exceeded everyone’s expectations.
“This year we recruited around 25 committee members who helped make this day possible. We had lots of generous donations from local businesses, that not only donated their services but their valuable time and for that, we are extremely grateful.”
Ms Thomas added: “We would definitely recommend holding a Big Lunch to anyone. We've had such a great time, not only today, but also planning the event.
“It’s fantastic to think that so many people across the UK are sitting down together at Big Lunches today chatting to their neighbours and potentially building new lasting relationships.”
