1924: George Mallory, on his third attempt at conquering Everest, was seen for the last time at a point 800ft from the summit.

ON THIS DAY LAST YEAR: Dame Vera Lynn entered the top 20 at the age of 97 - which extended her lead as the oldest living artist to figure so high up in the album chart.
