HUNDREDS of drivers across Gwent will receive letters reminding them of the need to remove valuable possessions from their cars, or hide them when leaving vehicles unattended.
More than 300 vehicles were checked in theft hotspot areas in Caerphilly and Blaenau Gwent on just one night last week by police, with more than 100 found to have been left with valuables on display.
Items in plain view that could tempt thieves included satnavs, mobile phones, sensitive paperwork, sports bags, CDs, a pram and, in works vehicles, copper piping and tools.
Eighteen special constables checked cars in the areas last week in a National Volunteer Week initiative, then joined regular officers for the hotspot checks.
All vehicle owners will now receive a letter pointing out the concerns, and containing advice.
“This exercise was aimed at reminding people to take more care when leaving a parked vehicle,” said Inspector Carl Williams of Gwent Police.
“Not only are people leaving their belongings in their cars, they are also leaving them insecure, with windows often left open.
“Our message is simple: Take more care when leaving your car. Remember to move anything out of sight that could be considered to be of value or even better, take them with you. If you are leaving your car all day, park near a street light or CCTV camera if possible.”
As well as removing valuable possessions from your car, or hiding them, police are reminding vehicle owners to: Activate alarms before leaving their vehicles; remove the front cover from the car stereo if possible; postcode mark valuables using a UV pen and photographing valuable items, especially electrical equipment, – for easier identification if stolen.
