JULY marks Scams Awareness Month and Age Cymru’s annual campaign to highlight the threat that scammers pose, particularly to the elderly.
Older victims are believed to lose an average of £1,200 if they are the subject of one of these scams.
They can operate over the telephone, the internet, direct mail and face to face on the doorstep. Pressure to comply has resulted in individuals losing their life savings, their self esteem and even their homes.
Raising awareness of these issues is an important first step in tacking the threat that scammers pose to the most vulnerable in our community.
I strongly support Age Cymru’s campaign and as an Assembly Member, I am committed to ensuring that older members of our communities receive the support and protection that they need. It’s vital that we work with families, friends and carers who look after older people and make them aware of the dangers. For more information about the campaign or assistance from Age Cymru, contact the Advice Line on 08000 223 444.
The Welsh Government recently announced grant funding for war memorials across the country. The scheme offers funding of up to 70% of eligible costs up to a maximum of £10,000 for conservation and repair, and has been developed in partnership with the War Memorial Trust and Cadw. Newport has a number of impressive and important war memorials and it is essential that these are protected. If you, or a community group is involved in the upkeep and maintenance of a war memorial visit the Cadw website (www.cadw.gov.wales/historicenvironment/help-advice-and-grants/grants) for details on how to make an application.
Several weeks ago I hosted a Lottery funding event with John Griffiths, AM for Newport East. Many came along to find out what help was available from the Big Lottery, Heritage Lottery Fund, Arts Council, Sports Wales and GAVO for their communities or for specific projects. For further details, visit my website.
I will be holding a number of street surgeries and information events in the constituency over the coming weeks. My next event will take place on Friday 12th June at Maesglas Community Centre, Bideford Road. Representatives from South East Wales Energy, Newport City Council grants and housing, Care and Repair and the Newport Credit Union will be on hand to offer advice. For further details contact 01633 222523.
