FAST food giant McDonald’s is reviewing the height of a 12-metre high sign at a proposed restaurant in Llanfoist, near Abergavenny, following objections to it.
A spokeswoman said the decision to review the height of the 24-hour illuminated sign follows strong objections by the Brecon Beacons National Park Authority and Torfaen Borough Council, on behalf of Blaenavon World Heritage Partnership.
She said: “Following the objection raised, we have decided to review the height of the restaurant sign.”
Both authorities expressed concern that the proposed restaurant, on land off Merthyr Road, could have a detrimental impact on views into and out of the National Park.
Torfaen council said that whilst there is no objection to either the principle of the development of the overall design, it considers the proposed 12-metre high totem the most controversial element in the design.
The proposal has divided residents, with both petitions and campaign groups being formed for and against.
The ‘Yes to a McDonald’s in Abergavenny’ group has 2,076 members, while the no campaigners have 918 members.
The McDonald’s spokeswoman added: “Whilst we are aware that there are some local concerns, we are heartened to see a supportive Facebook group and independent website, along with a significant amount of positive comments submitted to Monmouthshire Council on the application.”
McDonald’s say the restaurant would create 65 jobs. The application has yet to be considered by Monmouthshire council’s planning committee.
