A NEWPORT boy is hosting a cake fest tomorrow to raise money for Cancer Research UK following the death of his grandmother.
Coby Westwood, eight, from St Julian’s, lost his grandmother, June, 57, to cancer when he was just three years of age in 2010.
Having seen an advert about Cancer Research UK on television, he told his mother, Nicola Cox, 27, that he wanted to raise money to “stop other people getting cancer, like nanna” and to find “better ways to make them better”.
The pair initially set themselves a target of £200, but they have already raised more than £260 for the UK’s largest dedicated research charity ahead of the event at the family home tomorrow.
Having been baking before the advert came on the television, Ms Cox said: “We had been baking some flapjacks, and one of his fond memories of his nanna was doing the same with her.
“He was so happy that we could do something. He thought I would say no because we were so busy.
“I was so touched and so proud that he wanted to do something.
“He is getting so excited watching the figure increasing and is very appreciative of everyone who is supporting him.”
Coby is already looking ahead to his next event and is hoping to do a sponsored walk to raise more money for the charity in the future.
