A NEWPORT primary school has raised more than £2,000 for Cancer Research UK following a Race for Life event last week.
Around 60 members of staff and 700 pupils took part in the three-mile race, which was organised by the Glan Usk glamour sports committee for the second year running.
Children from nursery all the way up to Year Six got into the spirit of things by donning pirate and fairy costumes, and medals were presented to each runner.
Liam Llewellyn, the school’s PE co-ordinator and Year Three teacher, said: “It was a great day and we’re on course to smash last year’s total
“With a full school event like this, the family really comes together to creates something special.
“We try to ensure the kids have an awareness of life’s everyday issues and educating them from a younger age brings that awareness.
“Everyone has felt the effect of cancer in some shape or form. We just wanted to support in any way we could."
“As they get older, the kids become aware of this unfortunate disease and our children know they can make a difference and be heard.
“Events like this gives them a voice.”
