POLICE are investigating a new claim of a sex attack on a train by the former House of Commons Speaker Viscount Tonypandy.

It is the second complaint of a sexual assault alleged to have taken place on a train by the late politician George Thomas, Viscount Tonypandy who died in 1997.

The allegation was received by Gwent Police and involves an incident of sexual assault involving the former Cardiff MP which allegedly took place on a train from Newport to London Paddington between 1964 and 1966.

The allegation was made on May 12, 2015 – the day the first allegations of sexual assault on a 22-year-old man on a train in 1959 were publicised.

British Transport Police (BTP) is investigating both allegations.

A BTP spokesman said: "BTP was made aware of an allegation of inappropriate touching involving the late George Thomas on board a train from London Paddington to Aberystwyth in 1959.

"I can confirm that a second report has been received, from Gwent Police, involving allegations of a sexual assault during a train journey from Newport to London Paddington between 1964 and 1966.

"The complainant, who was aged 16 or 17 at the time, did not wish to make a formal statement to police. The information has since been passed to the Operation Hydrant investigating team.

"Investigations into these allegations, and other historic sexual offences, remain ongoing."

The latest complaint is from a man who was aged 16 to 17 at the time of the assault was on the train in the mid-Sixties.

Detectives are still investigating claims that the former Cardiff Labour MP had sexually abused a nine year old boy in the early 1970's.

The inquiry - known as Operation Hydrant - began last year.
