GWENT Police are warning residents to be vigilant over their cars and property after a spike in reported incidents in the Abertillery area.
The warning comes after 18 incidents of car crime and criminal damage have been reported to Gwent Police between May 26 and June 15.
Reported incidents include damaged car windows and mirrors, stolen cars and bikes and tyres slashed.
Blaenau Gwent inspector Vicki Townsend said: "Extra patrols have now been put in place by uniformed and plain clothed officers. Our Area Support Unit will also be assisting in the area.
"Officers are currently investigating each reported crime and asking residents to secure their property.
“Criminal damage such as cars being keyed are often mindless acts by individuals, but be warned, if you are caught and found guilty of criminal damage you will face a criminal record and a possible fine of up to £5000.
“Sometimes there’s no real reason behind criminal damage but we want to advise residents and motorists to help them do as much as they can to prevent themselves from becoming a victim of crime.
"For example, you can help to protect your vehicle by simply folding in the wing mirrors, or by parking in areas that are covered by CCTV or have good street lighting.
“If you do see anyone committing any form of criminal damage, please contact Gwent Police immediately and remember, always ring 999 if you see a crime taking place.”
